At the dawn of 2010, Johnson C. Smith was barely clinging to its position in the USA Today/ESPN Division II Coaches poll. Virginia State promptly beat the Golden Bulls 59-50 on January 2 to knock JCSU out of the rankings.
On Monday, the Golden Bulls may have returned the favor.
Sheria Hatcher scored seven of her game-high 19 points in overtime to help the Golden Bulls stop 25th-ranked Virginia State 64-59 at Daniel Gym.
Hatcher, who also pulled down nine rebounds, was able to offset the efforts of the Lady Spartans' Rhon'Neisha Taylor, who also had seven points in the overtime period. This allowed the free-throw shooting of Shontanelle Shaw, Tyra Breaux and Shakeena Cunningham to finish off VSU.
Breaux finished the game with 16 points and eight rebounds. Brittane Neely added 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Golden Bulls (14-4, 7-4).
Taylor led the Lady Spartans (12-4, 9-3) with 13 points, but was the only VSU player in double digits. Angela Brown added eight points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
VSU managed to hang tough through most of the game until Tierney Rock hit a three-pointer with 1:31 left in regulation to tie the score, 49-49. After that, both teams went cold, sending the game to overtime.
